Your Journey

After pickup at your hotel, you travel directly to the Zaanse Schans in a comfortable electric Mercedes vehicle. On arrival, a guided introduction covers the highlights of the area, including the working windmills, the characteristic green wooden houses and the traditional crafts. You then have free time to explore the Zaanse Schans independently – visit a working mill, watch a cheesemaker or clogmaker at work, walk along the River Zaan or simply enjoy the scenery at your own pace. At the agreed time, your driver picks you up for the return journey to Amsterdam.

About the Zaanse Schans

The Zaanse Schans is one of the most visited heritage sites in the Netherlands – and with good reason. The area preserves a working slice of 17th and 18th-century Dutch life: genuine windmills still turn, traditional crafts are practised daily and the landscape along the River Zaan looks much as it did centuries ago. It is one of the few places in the world where you can watch a windmill operating from the inside, see wooden clogs being made and buy genuine Dutch cheese just a short distance from where it was produced. The Zaanse Schans is popular, but with smaller group transport and a morning or off-peak departure, the experience feels far more relaxed than arriving by coach.

Practical Information

The Zaanse Schans tour departs from selected Amsterdam hotels at set times throughout the day. The tour price is per person and is all-in for transport and the guided introduction. Entry fees to individual attractions at the Zaanse Schans are paid separately. Comfortable walking shoes and a weather-appropriate layer are recommended - the Zaanse Schans is an outdoor site and the Dutch weather is unpredictable. The tour runs in all weather conditions unless official safety warnings apply. Full cancellation and rebooking terms are set out in our Terms and Conditions.

Why Travel with Sustainable Tours Amsterdam

The difference between this tour and a standard bus trip comes down to a few things that matter: you start from your hotel rather than a central meeting point, you travel in a vehicle that carries a fraction of the passengers of a typical coach, and the journey itself is quiet and smooth rather than noisy and stop-start. The Zaanse Schans can get busy - particularly at peak times - but travelling in a smaller group means you move at your own pace rather than being herded through the highlights. Local drivers, electric vehicles and a straightforward booking process per person round out the offer.
