Day trips from Amsterdam to Zaanse Schans and Volendam

Two of the most authentic places in the Netherlands sit just outside Amsterdam, and both are easy to combine with a relaxed day trip. Why visit the Zaanse Schans

The Zaanse Schans is one of the few places in the world where you can step inside a working windmill and watch traditional industry happening in real time. Mills still grind, saw and press, exactly as they did three centuries ago. Beyond the mills, the area preserves a complete Dutch village from the 17th and 18th centuries: green wooden houses, narrow paths, a working clog workshop, a cheese farm and a working saw mill. Volendam is one of the best-known fishing villages in the Netherlands, and unlike many heritage sites it is still genuinely lived in. Local families still work in fishing, the harbour is still active, and traditional Volendam costume is still worn at festivals and special occasions. Walking along the Haven you will find fresh herring stalls, small cafés, traditional Dutch sweet shops and wide views over the IJsselmeer. The village is around 25 minutes from Amsterdam, and the relaxed pace makes it a perfect contrast to the busy city centre.
